Obsidian Shade
In this blog post we're diving into the inspiration behind the Obsidian Shade — a semi-transparent black finish that lets you see what's happening inside a Monos.
For a long time, we tried to hide visible LEDs. Seeing those LED "hotspots" can feel tacky, or just plain cheap.
But the lighting animations we've developed are so dynamic and alive that we wanted to lean into them — and create a design that puts the inner workings on full display.

The name Obsidian is a nod to the glassy black volcanic stone used throughout history for tools, mirrors, and ritual objects. In the ancient world, obsidian was prized for its protective and grounding energy.
We'd like to think this shade can bring a similar — if more modern — feeling to your home: something to help sweep away the noise and settle the spirit.
We originally launched this shade as a limited release - but after seeing crazy demand, we have decided to slowly make it a permanent product offering! The original limited release is gone, but you can still pre-order a Monos Obsidian today, which will ship in August.
